Farnsworth suspended, appeals

April 19, 2008

MLB wasn’t too pleased with Kyle playfully tossing a ball in the direction of Manny in Thursday’s game it appears… He’s being suspended for three games but has appealed through the players’ union meaning he won’t start serving until the appeal is heard.  Not Farnsey’s first trip to the penalty box as he’s been suspended thrice prior to this, twice for brawling.

I’m all for sending a message, but don’t aim for the head, especially when you can throw 98 miles per hour.  Just read Ron Luciano’s story in The Umpire Strikes Back about Paul Blair lying unconscious and bleeding from the nose, mouth, and ears after getting hit below the helmet with a fastball.  It ain’t pretty and it has no place in baseball.  Next time, please just bean him in the back.

If this suspension were actually to start tonight, it could be ugly.  The bullpen has been taxed to the max the last two night and if Kennedy has another rough start it could be three in a row.  As much as he’s been unpredictable, we need him to eat up some innings.  Bruney and Ohlendorf can’t do it all by themselves.

As always, thanks to PeteAbe for reporting this.
